Parent Newsletter          Bovina High School

Principal’s Corner

Principal’s Notes by Dale Fullerton

I hope everyone has had a great beginning to the 2009 year. I would like for all of our parents to know that we will be gearing up for the TAKS test which is the last week in April.  This is very important to each student at Bovina High School. To graduate a student must pass all TAKS test as a junior.  It also allows students to be eligible for the Optional Flexible Year Program, which means finishing school May 14th instead of May 28th.

As we anticipated the first semester has gone extremely well. I would like to thank the entire faculty and staff for a job well done.

Throughout the first semester of school, I have enjoyed the collaborative efforts of our students, parents and staff. It is my hope that this effort will continue throughout the 2009-2010 school year. I strongly believe that parents play a key role in contributing to a student’s academic success. Your support, encouragement and involvement contribute significantly to your student having a successful educational experience here at Bovina High School.  We are fortunate and appreciative of our parent groups that do so much for our Bovina High School students and staff. Without their involvement, many of the important programs that contribute to student success would not be possible. I encourage all parents to join and participate in one of our Bovina High Booster groups which include our Athletic Booster Club and the Band Booster Club.

I look forward to the upcoming semester and will continue to stress the importance of communication among our students, parents, faculty and staff. Communication between all segments of the school community is the basis of all improvement for both the students and the school. I will continue to have an open door policy and will welcome any visits or phone calls.

I am happy to report that we have a 96.53% attendance rate which is an outstanding percentage. We also have two students with perfect attendance. We appreciate you getting your students to school. When they are gone it is very hard for them to catch up.

Counselor’s Corner

Counselor’s Notes by Rocio Mata

The fall semester has come and gone, and many important things have happened at Bovina High School.  During this semester, your child had the opportunity to attend a College and Career Day here on our campus.  They were able to visit at least two different career fields and one college/university.  We had great collaboration from professionals around the area.  They enjoyed visiting with our students and commented about how well behaved our students were.  We are working to provide a college-minded atmosphere on our campus, and we appreciate all of your assistance.

For our students to be ready to attend college, we need to make sure they are taking rigorous classes, passing the TAKS test and taking the appropriate college entrance exams like ACT/SAT.  During the fall semester, the juniors had the opportunity to take the PSAT, and now they need to be registering to take the ACT/SAT.  Juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to take the ASVAB test on January 4.  I have sent a brochure home for your information.

The senior students have worked on scholarships essays and a resume of their high school activities.  This will assist them when they are working on scholarship applications. I will continue working with them on admission applications during the spring semester, and we will have a financial aid night with a college representative to assist in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
